Aluminium Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets NZ
The cabinet material does much of the quiet work in an outdoor kitchen. It supports the benchtop, holds your equipment and faces moisture, dirt and changing weather long after the BBQ has cooled. Forge Outdoor uses powder-coated aluminium cabinetry for a modular kitchen that can be planned around your space.
Our cabinets are welded and internally reinforced, with adjustable feet and 20mm sintered stone benchtops. We are a Pukekohe-based family business supplying and installing outdoor kitchens for New Zealand homes. The important choice is not simply metal versus timber: it is how the complete kitchen is designed, installed and maintained.
Why aluminium works outdoors
Aluminium does not rot or absorb moisture and swell like timber-based cabinet materials can. It does not develop the red rust associated with iron and ordinary steel. A powder-coated finish provides colour and a protective surface that suits a designed outdoor area.
That does not make aluminium immune to every form of corrosion. Salt deposits, damaged finishes and unsuitable cleaning products can still cause problems. Choose a layout you can clean, discuss the site's exposure before ordering and follow the supplied care instructions.
Aluminium compared with stainless steel
Stainless steel can perform well outdoors when the grade, finish and detailing suit the environment. Coastal exposure makes that selection particularly important. Salt deposits can cause staining or localised corrosion, and stainless surfaces still need cleaning. It would be misleading to say every stainless kitchen will rust or that every grade behaves alike.
Powder-coated aluminium offers a different appearance and a choice of finishes, while stainless provides an exposed metal surface. Compare the construction, hardware, maintenance requirements and written warranty of the actual products rather than judging only by the material name.
Aluminium compared with timber
Timber can bring warmth to a landscape design, but the species, treatment, finish and exposure all matter. Outdoor cabinetry needs to account for moisture movement and protect vulnerable edges and joints. A finish may require renewal to keep the intended appearance.
Aluminium avoids the rot and moisture-related swelling concerns associated with timber-based cabinet bodies. It still needs washing and care, but it does not need the same approach to timber finishing. Consider how much ongoing maintenance is realistic for your household or bach.
Aluminium compared with concrete block
A concrete-block kitchen can create a substantial permanent structure. It needs a suitable foundation, careful construction and provision for appliance openings and services. Its fixed form can make later layout changes more involved.
A modular cabinet system offers a different way to organise the project. Individual units are selected around cooking and storage needs, then arranged into a confirmed layout. Future changes still depend on compatible modules, available space and any alterations to the benchtops or services; modular does not mean every change is automatic.
Coastal care and cabinet construction
Salt can settle beneath shelter as well as on exposed fronts. Use gentle cleaning methods and remove deposits in line with the supplied instructions. Keep water away from appliance openings and electrical parts, and avoid abrasive pads that could damage the finish.
Forge's welded, internally reinforced cabinetry is supported on adjustable feet. The installation still needs a suitable prepared base. We confirm dimensions, appliance fit and the installation scope before the order is finalised. Aluminium cabinetry carries a 10-year limited warranty and the powder coating a 6-year warranty, subject to their terms.
Plan the whole kitchen
Read about sintered stone benchtops and how modular kitchens work. Then compare gas BBQ and kamado arrangements. Leave enough clear bench space for the meals you actually cook.
Quotes are provided within 1–2 business days. Lead times are up to 12 weeks, with timing confirmed for your order and a 50% deposit to proceed. Prices include GST. Tapware is not supplied, and your own tradespeople complete gas, water and electrical work.
Your questions, answered
Do aluminium outdoor cabinets rust?
Aluminium does not form red iron rust, but it can corrode under unsuitable conditions. Maintain the powder-coated finish and remove salt deposits according to the supplied care instructions.
Are aluminium cabinets maintenance-free?
No. Gentle cleaning is needed to remove dirt, salt and cooking residue. Coastal and sheltered surfaces both need attention.
Is stainless steel unsuitable outdoors?
No. Suitability depends on its grade, finish, detailing and exposure. Compare the complete product and its maintenance requirements rather than making a blanket judgement.
What warranty does Forge provide?
Forge provides a 10-year limited warranty on aluminium cabinetry and a 6-year powder coat warranty, subject to the applicable terms.
