How to plan an outdoor kitchen layout

Start with your space, your favourite way to cook and room to prepare and serve.

Measure your available area and note doors, walkways and existing services. Choose your cooking appliance, then allow preparation space beside it. Think about storage, shade and whether you need a sink or fridge. Confirm appliance clearances and ventilation before finalising your layout.

How much does an outdoor kitchen cost in NZ?

Your layout, cabinet selection, benchtop and appliances all shape the final quote.

Begin with the features you will use most. Compare quotes using the same inclusions, and check GST, appliances, delivery, installation and any plumbing, gas or electrical work. Send Forge your preferred design for confirmed pricing and inclusions.

How do I choose an outdoor kitchen company in New Zealand?

The best fit depends on your space, budget and cooking preferences. Compare materials, inclusions, installation and support.

Ask how the cabinetry and appliances suit your site’s exposure and what maintenance they need. Request clear specifications, warranty terms, lead times and a quote showing exactly what is included. A useful design process should help you understand your layout before committing to an order.

Best outdoor kitchen materials: aluminium vs timber vs stainless

Outdoor kitchens in New Zealand face strong UV, rain, humidity and, near the coast, salt air. The cabinet material plays an important part in how well your kitchen holds up.

  • Timber looks warm but can swell, warp and crack as moisture levels change, and needs regular oiling, sealing or recoating depending on the timber and finish.
  • Stainless steel is heavier than aluminium for the same volume, and thin sheets can flex and dent. Depending on the finish, it can show fingerprints and marks, reflect glare in bright sun, and need regular cleaning and occasional polishing to keep it looking its best.
  • Powder-coated aluminium does not rot and resists corrosion and moisture-related swelling. It is lightweight, which reduces the weight the hinges carry. Doors should still be secured in windy conditions. It is low maintenance: clean with mild soapy water and gently rinse with fresh water, following the supplier’s care instructions and keeping water away from appliance openings and electrical components.

That’s why every Forge kitchen is built on CoreFrame, our aluminium cabinet and door system designed for demanding outdoor conditions.

  • Cabinet construction: lightweight aluminium with internal reinforcement and welded joints for a rigid, stable frame.
  • CoreFrame panels and doors: aluminium panels that resist warping and corrosion, helping doors stay straight and close properly season after season. Finished with the integrated StealthGrip Profile, a built-in grip with no projecting handle to snag.
  • Finish: BlackSand powder-coating for a durable, UV-resistant surface.
  • Benchtops: 20mm Sandy Bay sintered stone that resists heat, stains and scratches.
  • Hardware and support: stainless hinges and adjustable feet that level the cabinets and raise them clear of the ground. Position the kitchen on a suitable base where water does not pool.
  • Warranty: 10-year limited warranty on the aluminium cabinetry. Contact Forge for the full warranty terms.

Other colours are available on request. Follow the care instructions, use a trivet for hot cookware, and consider a cover to reduce dust build-up and help protect your kitchen over the long term.

Your questions, answered

Can I design my own outdoor kitchen?

Yes. Explore cabinet combinations and appliance options in our online 3D designer, then send your layout to Forge for a quote.

Can you put a pizza oven in an outdoor kitchen?

Yes, with a suitable module and enough space for the specific oven. Confirm the oven’s support, ventilation and clearance requirements before placing it near walls, a roof or other appliances.

What is the best outdoor kitchen layout for a small space?

A compact straight run is a useful starting point. Prioritise the cooking appliance you use most, a clear preparation surface and practical storage. Measure door openings and walkways as well as the available wall length. Send us measurements and a photo for help choosing a layout.

Does an outdoor fridge need shade?

Yes. Plan a shaded position and follow the fridge manufacturer’s ventilation and installation requirements. Direct sunlight can affect performance.

Do I need council consent for an outdoor kitchen in NZ?

It depends on the work involved. New plumbing or drainage, an additional sink, a roof or structural alterations can affect consent requirements. Some work is exempt, but conditions apply and exempt building work must still comply with the Building Code. Check the full proposal with your local council and the relevant authorised trades before starting.

Will an outdoor kitchen last near the coast?

An outdoor kitchen can suit a coastal home when its materials, finish and installation are appropriate for the exposure. Salt deposits can affect coatings and hardware, so regular cleaning and the supplier’s care instructions matter. Tell Forge how close the site is to the sea and whether it receives salt spray so suitability and warranty conditions can be checked.

How long does an outdoor kitchen last?

There is no single lifespan for every outdoor kitchen. Cabinet construction, finish, exposure, installation and maintenance all affect service life, and appliances may need attention or replacement before the cabinetry. Ask for the written warranty and care requirements for each component; a warranty period is not a guaranteed lifespan.

For consent guidance, see MBIE’s advice on checking whether you need consent.
